Today wrapped up the last full week of October for us here in second grade!

We had a great- and very productive week.

Next week promises to be just as productive!

In reading/spelling/grammar we will continue to work on the same words/story (Corduroy)and skills as we did last week.  Between the day off this week and Halloween next week this works out best.

We spent a lot of time working on our fairy tales this week!  Wait until you read them because they are amazing!  We will be finishing them and publishing them next week.  Once published, we will illustrate!

We finished chapter 2 in math and next week we will start chapter 3.  Chapter three starts with graphs.  In religion we continued our study of the sacraments.  Next week we will also discuss the saints/ All Saints Day.  We have mass Tuesday at 10:30.

We did start our pumpkin investigations this week, however the fairy tales took a lot of our time, so we will work on the pumpkins next week :)

Monday is Halloween.  Please send a bag for the trunk or treat treats :)  Children are either going home at 11:45 for lunch and to change or they are changing here after lunch (if so send costume please.)  Please do not come to school in costume.  There will be no homework Monday.

Have a great weekend :)

Halloween Math

Wednesday, October 26, 2016

There is no homework tonight. That said, everyone should be able to get in and do some lessons there with the spelling words.

Due to the day off this week, Halloween next week and the difficulty of the spelling words- we will do this list for this week AND next week. Therefore, there will be no spelling test this week. We will have a test for these words next Friday.

There is a chapter 2 math test Friday.

Please return the form about whether your child is staying for lunch or going home on Monday ( Halloween) The form should be returned by Friday.

I have ordered blank hardcover books for the students to write their fairy tales in. The cost per child is $5. Please send the $5 in by Monday.

We finished another wonderful week in second grade!

Looking forward to next week.....

Next week the story in our reader is "Corduroy."  This story is always a favorite!  We will learn about making inferences when reading as a comprehension skill.  We will also continue to practice sequencing.  We are going to do some lessons on when to use capitalization and how to use a dictionary/glossary.  The vocabulary words for next week are : escalator, fastened, yanked, palace and dashing.  Our spelling words will focus on "kn" and "ph" sounds.

In the last two weeks we have been reading fairy tales. Next week......we are going to write our very own!!!  Each child will choose a mentor text (a fairy tale to use as a model) and will write his or her own story.  This is going to take some time but the results, I promise, will be amazing.  When we finish writing our stories- we will be publishing them in actual books and Mrs. Dennehy will be helping us to illustrate the books and covers.  I will send a note next week, but as a heads up, I will be asking each child to send in $5 to cover the cost of the blank books I will order.

We are wrapping up chapter two in math on Monday and Tuesday.  We will have the chapter 2 test on Friday.  Should you wish to begin to review with your child the basic concepts that we covered are - place value, writing in expanded form (example 47 in expanded form is 40+7), putting numbers in order from smallest to greatest and greatest to smallest, even and odd, rounding and estimation.

This week in science we talked about force- push and pull.  The students did a great job and learned a lot!  Next week, it's all about pumpkins!!!  We will have lots of lessons in math and science- all hands on!  The pumpkin investigations really provide the opportunity for so much discovery and learning.  In social studies, we will continue to learn about the upcoming election and the candidates.

In religion we will be finishing Chapter 4 moving on to chapter 5 and continuing in our study of the sacraments.  The focus is on Baptism and Confirmation.

*** All students are getting a notice today to please bring in a pumpkin next week.  Next week we will be doing our pumpkin investigations.  We will be pumpkin experts come Friday!  We will do science experiments, like sink/float, and tons of math activities including circumference and weight lessons.  Please do not send a huge pumpkin- something in the small to medium range would be best.  Also, please do not send the "mini" pumpkins either, as we will be opening them up and pulling out the pulp and seeds :)  Kindly, write your child's name on the bottom of the pumpkin in permanent marker so we know which pumpkin belongs with which child!  The week of pumpkin lessons is always very fun and full of discovery!

***Beginning next week, be on the look out for a third homework assignment.  It will be either grammar related or science/social studies.  Expect that it will either be a worksheet or something to be completed in the homework notebook (example- write a list of 5 proper nouns.)

Good Evening!

Last week we wrapped up yet another great week in second grade!

Looking forward to this week-

In reading we will be reading the fable "The Lion and the Mouse."  We will discuss the features of a fable and will compare them to the the fairy tales we read last week.  The vocabulary words that go with this story are: snoozing, raged, furious, gnaw and repay.  You may want to review the definitions of these words with your child during the week- as this is the first chapter that has what I believe are mostly new and possibly challenging words.  We will also write a response to this story, as we did with fairy tales last week.  We will continue to work on linking verbs and will start to learn about subject and predicate.  Our spelling words will all have the long "e" sound.

In math, we continue in chapter 2 with place value.  We will be hitting a few major topics this week- comparing numbers (greater than, less than, equal to), estimation, rounding to the nearest ten and even and odd numbers.

In religion, we will begin Chapter 4 which focuses completely on the sacrament of Baptism.  It discusses in detail how at baptism we become children of God and members of the church.

This week we are moving on in science to a new unit of study- forces and motion.  We will discuss the what a force is and the differences between push and pull.  We will do hands on exploration in these lessons.

In social studies we are going to start to discuss election.  We will talk this week about who is running for president, which party he or she represents and who will/can vote.

Odds and ends-

Book Fair starts tomorrow

Saturday, October 8, 2016

We completed another great week in second grade!!!

In reading, we read about being kind to the Earth.  We also read two decodable books.  We reviewed nouns and began to learn about action verbs and alphabetical order.  Looking towards next week, our new story will be "The Elves and the Shoemaker," which is always a fun fairy tale to read.  We will supplement this with reading some other favorite fairy tales as well and will focus on sequencing as a comprehension skill.   Next week we will also begin to discuss "helping" and "linking" verbs- such as is, are and have.

Next week in spelling, we will continue our work with long vowel sounds.  The new words and assignments are already posted on so feel free to get started on that during the long weekend.  I am so happy to see that so many students were working on the computer at home with the words!!  Keep up the great work!!

We will spend so much time with fairy tales as a genre this week, and probably going into the following week, that we will also work on writing a response to literature.  The students will focus on writing about whether they liked certain fairy tales and why.  They will be challenged to explain specifically what they like, didn't like, what they were reminded of or how the story made them feel

We are moving on to Chapter 2 in Math now!  Everyone did very well on the first chapter test and we are ready to take on place value! In science, will wrap up our study of matter next week.

In religion we continue to work in Chapter 3, discussing the sacraments.  We will also learn about St. Teresa of Avila, whose feast day is October 15.

A few odds and ends....

Parents- Reminder, tomorrow is the last day for Girl Scouts registrations
Hello -

Please check your child's folder today.  It is full of many important papers.  There is letter explaining our Flat Stanley Project.  If you know anyone who would be willing to complete a Flat Stanley for us (from any state or country other than NJ) please give them Stanley.  If you need more Stanleys, please let me know....I can send more home, email them to you or your family/friend or even put them in the mail if you provide the address. Our hope is to get many Stanley's back as possible.  The students really love when Stanley arrives from someone they know.  Last year we got tons of Stanleys and we also got pictures of him from all over the world.  People sent us all sorts of information about their states and treats including stickers, pencils, pens etc.  It is such a fun learning experience.

In addition, in the folder you will find the requested list of websites.  You will also see the information.  Please log on tonight- or at least this week- and let your child play the games to go with this week's spelling words.  Each student was able to log into his or her account today and completed one game.  I would love any feedback you have on this- as it is my first time trying this website.

Book orders are due October 7, 2016- Friday.
