Good Afternoon/Evening

First of all, I am sorry for the late post...we all had a very busy day!!
Today we continued to work on features of nonfiction text in reading.  We spoke specifically about photographs and how they help the reader to comprehend (or remember) what they read.  We also reviewed the different strategies for figuring out unknown words.  We had a most exciting grammar lesson ( yes- you read that correctly!)  We read "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and then we discussed adjectives to describe the Grinch in the beginning of the story and at the end.  Then we did a fun project to go with the lesson...I will post a picture soon.  In math we continue to practice regrouping in addition.  We have finished the chapter, so I will give the test next week -prior to the vacation.  In social studies we spent some times discussing the different holidays celebrated in December, including Christmas, Hanukah, and Kwanzaa.

We TOTALLY ran out of time today...we were just THAT busy and therefore ( much to the students' disappointment) there is NO HOMEWORK tonight.  There was no time to write homework and I didn't want parents to feel forced to check the blog to find the enjoy :)

See everyone tomorrow!

~ I will give the spelling test on Monday.  I was out yesterday, I will give the test when I return on Monday.

~Tuesday will be very busy.  Our publishing party will start at 8:20.  It will take at least an hour - to read the books, then we will have coffee and treats afterwards.  Also the Prayer Service is Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm

~ Wednesday is a half day, noon dismissal.  There is NO after care.

~ Monday, November 27 is the First Penance meeting for parents 7:30 pm in Mary's Chapel/Lower Church

Chapter 3 Review

1.     Circle Charts.  Students should know how to read it and answer simple questions such as which color was the favorite/least favorite?  How many students chose blue?  Which color got one more/less vote than purple?

2.     Pictographs – The MOST IMPORTANT thing about the pictograph I have told the students is to look at the key.  If they are having trouble- before they answer a question, they should do the math- get the totals for each section:

Favorite Pets

O O O O   ( 3+3+3+3 = 12 – they should write this right on the chart so they have the totals to help answer the questions)
O  (3)
O O   (3+3=6)
O  O  O   ( 3+3+3=9)
KEY:  Each O stands for 3 votes

They have to know how to answer questions such as –which was the most/least popular?  How many children chose dogs and birds?  How many more children chose birds than cats?

3.     Range, Median and Mode – they need to know that when given a group of numbers the first thing they do is put them in order from least to greatest, if a number appears two or three times they must write it in the order that many times.
Example:  Bill plays a game.  His scores are 3, 7, 5, 9, 3.
The first thing they do put the numbers in order:
To get the range: largest number minus smallest 9-3=6 Range is 6
Mode is the number they see the most= 3
Median- the number in the middle = 5
To remind them I tell them MOde = MOst
They also need to be able to get the mode and range using a line plot – same thing range largest number minus smallest number and mode the number that occurs the most.

4.     How to use the data in a tally graph to create a bar graph.

5.     Venn Diagrams.  This is a chart with two overlapping circles.  So they get see a table that provides data – say Apples and Oranges.  The table will provide facts.

Red, thin peel, fruit, grown on tree
Grows on tree, orange, fruit, leathery rind

They need to use that chart to fill in the Venn Diagram.

The diagram is two overlapping circles.  It will say Apples on the left circle and Oranges on the right.  To complete the diagram they write the apple only characteristics left circle.  The overlapping/common to both characteristics in the middle where the circles overlap.  Write the orange only characteristics in the circle to the right.

Then be able to answer questions such as how many characteristics do they share? How many characteristics are for apples only.

The blog is not letting me post the sample diagram for some reason.  I will print the review on paper Monday and will send it home in folder.

Wow, what a day!  Another very productive one too!!  In reading we finished the "Ants" selection and started a new selection called "If You Find a Rock."  We did the vocabulary words for the new selection which are - trace, chain, fossil, outstretched and print.  Then we did something awesome- we used the glossary for the first time and we looked them up!  In writing we worked in our handwriting books and we finished up fairy tales- almost done!  In grammar we talked more about proper nouns and we watched a clip on BrainPop about nouns.  We spoke specifically about how names of places and holidays always start with a capital.  Math was so great today!  We did range, mode and median!!!  I was really so happy with the students really seemed to get a good starting grasp on this today- as it is really very hard!  We worked so hard that we had to take a two minute stretch break!  Dr. Valenti popped in and was very impressed with how much they knew!  Lastly, we read two chapters in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."  It was a great day!

Good Evening!!!

Well we sure got a ton of work done today!!!  In Religion we finished Chapter 7 - which focused on Ordinary Time.  We talked about some things we do with our families during Ordinary Time- like going to mass on Sundays or maybe volunteering time at a soup kitchen or donating food.  We started Chapter 3 in Math.  Today's lessons focused on reading a table and a pictograph.  I explained to the class that the MOST important part of the pictograph is the KEY!  Last year, when they did pictographs in first grade each picture in the graph represented only "one" of the item you were graphing....this year the pictures stand for more than one and this takes some time to get used to and remember.  In reading today we continued to discuss the features on nonfiction text- and this lesson carried over into both our science and social studies lessons (which was pretty awesome.)  Two new features we discussed ( and saw) today are close up pictures and "actual size" pictures.  In science the class got their first National Geographic Magazine and it has a whole article on  leaf cutter ants!!!!  ( This is great because our reading selection is also about ants, so everything is connecting!) We started the first part of the article and we discussed the vocabulary word "mandibles." We also read and discussed about how amazing an ant colony is.  They truly work as a family and every ant has a very specific job - we counted 8 jobs today.  We also watched a short clip of a National Geographic for kids video about ants.  In social studies we talked about Veteran's Day.  We did a Scholastic News Magazine on Veteran's Day and discussed the diagram (feature of nonfiction :) of the tank on the back of the magazine.  We finished Unit 1 in Grammar which focused on the four types of sentences, pronouns, conjunctions and subject and predicate.  We started Unit 2 which focuses on nouns.  And then there's the fairy of now, the entire class has finished the publishing phase and most of the class has finished illustrating.  We hope to have the illustrating finished Monday and will begin to share our books with other classes on Tuesday.

A few reminders:

~ I only heard from a few parents about coming on the trip in May ( we have plenty for those who cannot come - I don't NEED more) - but if you want to come please let me know because I need to let the museum know the general number of people.
~ If you can send me a can of Lysol (like the air disinfectant) spray I would really appreciate it. I am trying to keep the germs at bay
~ We are doing a school wide winter clothing drive (hats, gloves, scarves and socks) for those in need.  Please send NEW items if you can.  I am running the drive so all donations can be made in my classroom.  This is a great opportunity to give to those in need and to explain to our children that there are so many people in need.  Even one donation will make a difference to a child/adult who has so little.
~ Our fairy tale publishing celebration is Tuesday, November 21 at 8:20 am.  Thank you to the parents who offered to help me by sending in items for afterwards.
~ Girl Scouts Meeting is Friday the 17th...all girls MUST be registered to attend.

Happy Veteran's Day to all who have served.  Thank you - to you and your families- for your service and unwavering dedication to our country.

Two Notes Going Home Today

Here are two things going home today - a note about the class trip and fairy tale publishing along with chapter 2 math review for test on Thursday:

                                                                        November 3, 2017

Dear Parents,
As I am sure you have heard, we are well into the writing of our fairy tales.  The time has come to begin to publish the fairy tales.  I have ordered the books we will use to publish.  If you could please send in $4, by next Friday to cover that cost, I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, I have booked our field trip for the end of the year.  We will be going to The American Museum of Natural History on May 18.  The cost for an ADULT is $15.50- which includes the planetarium.  I will not know the cost of a child until we book the bus, but it will probably be about $30.  I need to know how many adults want to come on the trip so I can ensure we have enough room in the cafeteria for lunch and enough seats during the planetarium show.  Each child is allowed to bring one parent/adult on the trip, but it is not necessary to bring an adult.  Please send me a note or email, by next Friday,             November 10, 2017,  if you plan of attending.
Thank you so much for your continued support.
Have a good weekend and God Bless,
Mrs. Potter
