Good Evening!

Today I sent home book orders.  Two things about the book orders- the one that says summer reading has a LOT of really good books which would be good for summer reading....if you're thinking ahead. Also, as you may have heard from your child we as a class really LOVE "Scaredey Squirrel."  There is a book in the summer order "Scaredey Squirrel Goes to the Beach."  Feel free to order it - obviously- however if you would like the original book Scholastic does have it (even though it isn't in the order.)  If you would like that book just jot me a note with the book order and the cost is $3.
Book orders are due Wednesday - with no late orders this time in hopes that we get them before vacation.

One more piece of information - many of the students have really gotten done to the bare bones in terms of their crayons.  Please ask your child if his or her crayons are either really worn down- or in some cases missing more than half the box.  If that's the case kindly send in a new box of crayons to get us through to the end of the year :)

Have a great weekend!

Here's what's happening in second grade this week-

We will be finishing the unit on time and money and will have a test on this on Wednesday.  When we have completed this, we will go back and finish the unit on geometry.

In reading we are continuing to read about animals and how they adapt.  We will also continue to read "Charlotte's Web."

This week your child will bring home a book report project.  I will attach directions, however here is some information about the project....

~Each child will read one book.  The book should be at least a short chapter book (ie: Junie B Jones, Magic Tree House)  The students must show me the book they wish to read no later than this Friday- March 31, 2017.
~The report is due on April 24, 2017.  This is the first day back after April vacation so everyone will have plenty of time to read and complete the report.
~The completed project will be to create a book jacket for the book (one that is different from the cover on the book you read.)  I will send home both the directions and the paper on which to do the project.

In science we will continue to discuss reptiles and amphibians and in social studies we are talking about maps.

In religion we are starting Unit 3 which focuses on the Eucharist- which is very appropriate for second grade this time of year.  I do hope everyone enjoyed the retreat.  The First Communion books are due April 24 as well.

I hope everyone has a great week!

No School Tomorrow 3/14/17
Snow Day
Enjoy and stay safe!!

**Book Orders due Wednesday**
Good Morning!!!

Well just when I thought we would have a normal week after Terra Nova a blizzard comes our way...we shall see what happens.....
Here' what's happening this week...
We are starting a new unit in reading..each story has a focus on how different animals use camouflage.  The new spelling words all have the "oo" spelling pattern.  Please make sure your child logs on to at the very least, one time this week.  The vocabulary words are camouflage,  mimicry, patterns, surroundings, pretenders and blend.  You may want to review them with your child.
In math we will continue with time and money.
In science we will be starting a new unit on reptiles and amphibians.  I anticipate that the students will enjoy this as much as they did the whales.

Girl Scouts Info

                                March 10, 2017

Dear Parents,

Hi!  Today you will be receiving your daughter’s Girl Scout vest.  The kindergarten girls will get blue Daisy vests.  The girls in grades 1 and 2 will get brown Brownies vests.  We figured since these girls will need the Brownie vest for next year, there was no point in wasting money on the blue Daisy vest for this group.  The kindergarten girls can use the blue vest for this year and next.  Hopefully, next year the kindergarten and first grade will be able to create their own true Daisy troop and then there will be two troops.  Enclosed with the vest are the numbers and the American flag.  The patches are to be ironed onto the vest on the right side (when worn right side, when looking at the vest to iron it’s the left side.)  The flag goes above the troop number 97110.   If you want a reference you can go to the Girl Scouts of America website and I am also attaching a picture.  I will also post this picture on my blog.   As we finish off this year (and from cookie sales) the girls will earn badges.  Almost every badge earned this year will go on the back of the vest.  Rule of thumb- round badges go on the back and triangular ones go on the front.  They can go anywhere you want on the back, there’s no specific order.

Cookie update….the cookies will arrive on March 17.  Mrs. Brignola and Mrs. Dennehy will pick them up.  Please allow us a few days (up to a week) to organize this.  There are over 1200 boxes of cookies so it will take time to sort through everything.

Meetings…the next meeting will be March 24.  It was posted on the first and second grade blogs and I reached out to the K moms.  We  didn’t want anyone to feel rushed today with the meeting and the Sweetheart dance and then next week is St. Patrick’s Day.  The next meeting is March 24 in my room until 4 pm.  For that meeting- Martucci has snack and Tiscornia has drinks.  We will let you know when the April meeting will take place because the second Friday of April is Good Friday and therefore we have no school.

Lastly, this Sunday at 9am there is a Girl Scout Mass at church.  If your daughter would like to participate (sit with the Girl Scouts) please be at church by 8:45 am and meet in the lower church.  Your daughter should wear her new vest with the flag and numbers already in place.  Mrs. Brignola will be there as well as the older girls.

Have a great weekend!!

Good Morning!!

As you all know, next week is Terra Nova testing.  I wanted to give everyone a little information before Monday.

First of all- there will be no homework next week :)

The best thing that you can do to help your children prepare for the test is to make sure they get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast.  For the most part we will be doing the test first thing in the morning every day - so please make sure your child is on time for school every day next week.

There is pizza lunch on Wednesday.

I would like to say that the students did a great job at mass yesterday.  I was very proud of everyone.

Have a great weekend :)
