There will be a Chapter 9 math test on Monday. Please look through your child's folder to see the math pages coming home. These pages will not only give you an idea of what will be on the test but they will also give you an idea of how your child is doing.
The following will be on the test:
~ three digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping
~ estimating/rounding to the nearest hundred *** This is by far the hardest concept in the chapter and is worth reviewing the problems will look like this :
+ 110 +______
They have to be able to round 450 to 500, 110 to 100 and then add 500 plus 100
~ Regrouping using models (see tonight's homework page 119)
~ Finding number patterns ( plus or minus 1, 10, 100) example: 246, 245, 244, _____
~ Word problems most of which contain two steps
~Last year there are 117 boys in scouts. 29 of them dropped out. This year there are 194 new scout members. How many boys are in the club now?
~ 137 Mets fans went to the game. 98 Nationals fans went to the game. 83 people left in the eighth inning (because the Mets were winning by 10 runs of course :) )How many fans stayed?
~ There is one more type of word problem, but I cannot explain it without pictures....therefore every student is bringing home a review page - page 125. They DO NOT have to hand this page in - I am sending it only so that you can see what the problems look like. They are challenging. When practicing I have stressed the words "difference" and "sum" to help them figure out what to do. The third question is the closest to what they need to be able to do - multiple steps.
