Good Afternoon

We had a very busy day today!  In math we finished Chapter 6.  A review will be posted and sent home today for the test which is Thursday.  We will review this week as well as begin Chapter 7 which is on time and money.  In reading we looked up the new vocabulary word - camouflage, blend, pretenders, mimicry, surrounds and patterns.  We read the new story "Animal Camouflage."  We did some test prep - which we will do every day this week.  You will find it come home every day so that you can also review with your child.  Since we will do it together and I would like you to see it- you will not see it marked by me.  In grammar we worked on homophones

                                                                             February 16, 2018
Dear Parents,

Next month our students will be taking the Iowa Assessment.  Let’s work together to make this a positive experience for your child.  In the classroom, I have been teaching a rigorous curriculum.  I have also been doing some test prep.  I will continue to do both of these things in every effort to have all students fully prepared to take the test.
Attached you will find a packet of work that I have put together as a way to help to prepare the students for the test.  The packet is OPTIONAL.  I know that next week is a vacation week and I expect that you will want to spend time with your families, so do not feel as though this must be completed.  I put this together as a review of concepts that have been taught throughout the year.
In addition to what is here, I would encourage you to review counting money and computation – both addition and subtraction- in math.  In reading, it is always best to have your child read to you (or independently) and then tell you important details about what has been read.  Children should be able to retell the story and recall important details such characters, main idea, problem, solution and setting.
I am also including a list of websites that you may wish to use over the vacation as well.  (test prep) (ss, current events) (math and reading games)  (reading and math) (reading) (reading/math/and more)

I hope that you all enjoy a restful and healthy vacation.

Good Afternoon!

We had a great day today!  In reading we started a new story "Grandpa's Corner Store."  In math we talked about vertices, edges and faces in solid shapes.  We also discussed congruent shapes. In grammar we finished antonyms and talked about word categories ( peach, apple, pear) and using context clue to figure out definitions.  We talked about the Liturgy of the Eucharist in religion and we finished Chapter 18.  We started to talk about taking the Iowa Assessment and did some practice vocabulary pages.  You will see the pages in the folder.  While the pictures are bigger than they will be on the test, the idea is the same.  We talked about reading all the words first, eliminating answers that are completely wrong, and then using the details in the pictures to choose the best answer.

Dear Parents,

GO USA!  Once again, the Winter Olympics are upon us!  In an effort to celebrate the Olympic games, while also learning about current events, we have a project upon us.  Attached you will find a current events report.  Students are expected to read one article about the Olympic Games.  The article can be from any newspaper or magazine and can be read with the help of an adult.  Students should read the article, complete the report form and attach the article to the report.  My expectation is that students will choose one sport/or topic of interest from the games and read about it from a source other than a book.  It is important for students to know that information- such as current events- can be obtained from sources such as newspapers and magazines.  The project is due Monday, February 26, 2018.

Thank You,

Mrs. Potter

Good Evening

We had a great day today.  We started Chapter 6 in math which focuses on geometry.  In reading we reread "Out and About in City Hall" and we read the decodable book "A Stroll On Mule Street," which we will work on more next week.  We worked on our whale reports,  I will figure out the date for which to share the reports this weekend and will let you know on Monday.  When the students share the reports we will do it first thing in the morning in the cafeteria.  Unlike the fairy tales, the reports are read only to your own parents, not to the entire class.  In addition we will be adopting a killer whale :)   This has been a very rewarding activity in the past,  as the students can learn about the Orca pods that live off the coast of Washington, and also we get to follow updates on the whale we choose.  The students will vote on the whale they want - last year we adopted Oreo.  The money collected for classroom adoption goes to help conserve the whales and their habitat and is donated to The Whale Museum in Washington, as part of the education program.  The cost will be $4.50.  More information will go home Monday.

Lastly  - today we talked about the Olympics.  It's such a special time of year for the world.  Information will go home next week for a current events project.  Students will be asked to read - with the help of an adult - one news article about the Olympic Games.  They will have to write a short summary of the article.  Information will go home next week and the assignment will be due February 26.

Have a great weekend :)

~ We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on FRIDAY, February 16, 2018.  Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday this year, so as an entire school, we have decided to celebrate on a different day.  Students are allowed to bring in valentines, so long as they have 1 for every child.  There are 18 students in the class.  Handing out the valentines is much easier if you do not address them individually on the envelopes (please.)  Thanks in advance for helping with that.

Good Afternoon

We had another great day in Catholic Schools Week!  Today we were so busy.  We started our whale reports and drew and labeled diagrams.  We also learned a lot about the HUGE blue whale. The actual numbers surrounding this animal are astounding...we found out a baby blue whale can drink 150 gallons of milk per day!  That's A LOT of milk. We also shared our saint projects today.  The students did a great job reading their reports to the class.  Thank you for helping them with this and thank you to those students who dressed up as their saint.
