Good afternoon

We had a great day!  In reading we read a new story, " The Empty Pot."  We reviewed, looked up and wrote sentences with the new vocabulary words.  In math we did word problems using money.  The problems had dollars and cents, so it went right along with the three digit addition we have been doing.  We did capital "t and f" in cursive.  In addition to all of this- we had a guest speaker today- Mr. Kelly, who is a graduate of our school! He told the school about how he just ran the Boston Marathon.  We will be doing a tag day in the future to help benefit an charity he works with.
Communion posters went home with those students who made communion this weekend.  Please return next week.  Congratulations to Serena!  I am sorry, I didn't know she also received communion this past weekend.  Please send in Clorox wipes and Lysol if you can.

Also- the weather is about to get HOT.  Please send in extra water.  Please make sure that your child's name/initials are on all water bottles.  As the temperatures get hotter you may even want to freeze water bottles the night before and they will defrost in the heat...

Good Afternoon!

We had a great day today :)
We took our math test for Chapter 8 and will begin Chapter 9 tomorrow.  Chapter 9 is on adding and subtracting in the 100s and it will involve regrouping twice ( just to give you an idea of what is coming.)  We read "Dragons and Giants" and we talked about the many components of the story that make it a fantasy ( animals that talk, wear clothes, have homes with furniture and read books.)  We also talked about the parts that are realistic ( the food chain - snakes and hawks do eat frogs and toads.)  We also reviewed the vocabulary words.  In grammar we worked on words that compare- big, bigger, and biggest.  We talked a lot about the sun today!  They should be able to tell you a few fun facts that we learned!

Good Afternoon

We did so much today.  In grammar we talked about sensory adjectives. In reading we read "Dragons and Giants," reviewed vocabulary and worked on summaries of the story.  We did a TON of review for tomorrow's math test.  You will notice that all students have a review packet that we worked on yesterday and today.  Students did some of this independently, however we reviewed what was done independently and finished it as a whole group.  This, combined with the review sheet and the quizzes that went home yesterday will be plenty to help prepare for the test tomorrow.  In science we started to talk about the sun!

Spelling - sentences 9-15 ( I forgot to tell them to do 4 in cursive so they don't have to do that today)

Good Evening!

We had such a great day in second grade today!  In math, we continued to work on place value in the hundreds.  We talked specifically about the value of each digit in a three digit number.  In reading, we read the decodable took "A Plant that Acts Like an Animal" and did comprehension questions.  We also read the story "I See Animals Hiding."  In grammar, we discussed possessive adjectives.  And in science we learned two awesome facts....

1- The first woman in space was named Valentina :)  (Valentina Tereshkova)
2- The term solar system comes from the Latin word "sol" meaning is named after the sun because the sun is the most important thing in the solar system

I did tell the students to explain these two facts, hopefully they remembered!

In social studies we discussed national symbols - specifically the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberyt, the flag and the bald eagle.  We also read a Scholastic News about bison snd how they were recently named the national mammal.

It was a very productive day!

Welcome back!!

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and a restful vacation.  We were very busy today and got right back into the swing of things.  We wrote about our vacations with a focus on adding details to our writing.  In reading we read a new story and we looked up new vocabulary words.  We actually used dictionaries for two of the words ( instead of the glossary) and this was very exciting!  The vocabulary words are: unaware, protective, available, coloration, imitator and natural.  In math we started a new chapter on place value to the hundreds!  We started a new chapter in religion about the saints and Mary.  In science we did something especially exciting....we started a new unit on SPACE!  We will focus on space between now and our field trip next month.  We also did the capital letters K and U in cursive.  It was a very busy day :)

Girl Scout meeting on Friday from 2:45-4.  Please note....there will be a service dog at this meeting.  We are lucky enough to be getting a visit from my aunt - Ann Benson- who has been training service dogs for Canine Companions for 20 years.  She will be bringing her almost 1 year old golden retriever- Hannon.  She will show the girls the different things that the dog is trained to do and will teach them about the amazing impact the dogs have on the lives of those in wheelchairs.  The girls DO NOT have to touch the dog, but will be allowed to pet it if they wish.  Please let me know if there are any allergies or other concerns.  I know this will be a great experience!
