Good Afternoon!

We had an "apple-lisious" day today!!!

We compared apple, weighed apples, measured apples and tasted apples.  We graphed apples, wrote facts about apples and made applesauce!!!

In addition to tons of apple experiments, we also did math, religion and reading and writing.

In religion we talked about the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.  We added them to our sacraments books.  In math we worked on finding the missing number is a number sentence.  In reading and writing reread the book "Mango, Abuela, and Me" and practiced making predictions based on text evidence.  We reviewed how many stories have a setting, problem and solution.  We discussed these parts of books we have already read.  Then we wrote about the problem and solution in the book we read today.  We also read with Mrs. Potter and did literacy centers...and took a spelling test!!

IMPORTANT - I have scheduled our MAP testing which will take place in the computer lab.  Since we have a window of time to complete this not every grade is doing it on the same date. Listed below are the days I have scheduled so far for us to take the three part (Reading, Math, Language Arts) test.  We will take one part each day.  Please be on time each day as I have scheduled it for first thing in the morning.

Good Afternoon!!!

What a fabulous day we had today!!!

We are apple experts! We started to learn fun facts about apples.  We also put an apple on a balance and weighed it in comparison to other classroom items.  Before weighing, we predicted and after weighing we recorded the data!! True scientists are here in grade two!!

In religion we continued to work on the seven sacraments.  We started a sacrament book and we focused on the sacrament of Baptism.  We spoke about how, through Baptism, we become members of the Church.

In reading, we read the book "Pecan Pie Baby."  We practiced making connections to other books we have read and about talked about how sometimes when we read we should stop and ask questions or mark a page with a post it as a reminder that we would like to talk about that page later.  We also practiced picking out "just right" books for independent reading. In writing, we wrote a letter to the main character of the book giving her some reasons why having a baby sibling can be fun.

In math, we worked on finding number patterns and continuing them.  This can be difficult, so please review at home.  We will have a math test next Thursday.  I posted the review last night.

I would like to let you know about a project we will be working on this year in religion.  One of our 8th Grade students has organized Prayer Partners for the entire school.  It will work in such a way that younger students will be paired with older students.  Our class will be working with 8th Grade students and meeting each month for projects and prayer sharing.

Our first project will be making an Intention Box.
We need your help for this project. Please send in a few items to decorate a 4 x 3 inch box which has been provided for us.

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

We had a very productive Monday here in second grade.  We wrote about our weekend this morning. Then, in reading we practiced two main skills- visualizing and writing about reading.  We listened to a story and visualized as the book was read (we didn't see the pictures .)  Then we wrote and drew about how the main character was feeling based only our our own visualizations and clues from the text.  We also wrote the beginning, middle and end of the story we read.  We worked in literacy centers and read with Mrs. Potter. We took a spelling pretest and corrected it.

In math, we practiced adding three and four digits.  This can be difficult, so please practice with your child at home. Tomorrow we will move on to subtraction.

In religion, we finished Chapter 1.  We reviewed that Jesus was both human and divine.  We also reviewed the meaning of Holy Family and Blessed Trinity.

We are learning about Johnny Appleseed in social studies and we started to share our All About Me posters with the class!

                                                                        June 24, 2019

Dear Camp Families,

Welcome to our first year of camp for the older students!  I hope that everyone has a great time.  My goal is to do some enrichment lessons in reading, writing, math and science through direct instruction and a STEM project.  To give you an idea of what we will be doing….here is my plan.
We will be reading the chapter book “The Lemonade War.”  This is a book about a brother and sister who set up opposing lemonade stands.  In math, we will focus on graphing, measurement and money.  In reading, aside from reading the book itself, we will also read other books about lemonade stands.  I have purchased numerous books (involving lemonade stands), at various reading levels so as to meet the needs of each student and also to challenge students. I believe the books are not only great literature, but will also spark interest in lemonade stands.  In writing, we will focus on writing about what we have read.  We will write using different comprehension strategies including- predicting, making connections, sequencing, and summarizing.  After the math, reading, and writing parts of the morning we will take a break to go outside/have a snack/play.  I anticipate that this will happen around 10:15 each morning.
The second part of the morning will focus on STEM activities.  Our goal is to build lemonade stands with a partner.  Using a variety of materials, students will create lemonade stands.  I will have them draw their designs, create names for their stands and create business cards.  They will choose a recipe from a children’s cookbook.
On Friday, the students will finish the book and their lemonade stands.  We will set the stands up at the end of the camp day and students will “sell” lemonade.
I am planning on sending home a folder each night.  The folder will contain the book we are reading as well as a “homework” assignment. There will be one math activity and one reading/writing activity.  Completing these assignments is COMPLETELY VOLUNTARY.  I know it’s the summer and everyone is busy.  I just thought some parents and students might enjoy the enrichment work.  Please return the folder each morning of camp.
The weather looks really great this week.  It’s going to get pretty warm, but it will be sunny which is great.  My classroom does have air conditioning.  Please send cold water every day for your child.  Each child should have water for the classroom, plus water/drink for snack. Once the students have chosen their recipes for their lemonades, I will ask for help with the supplies for making the lemonade.
Finally, I did purchase three play cash registers for the “sale day.”  I could use one or two more- just to borrow for the week.  If you happen to have one we could borrow, please let me know by Tuesday.
I am looking forward to a great week of fun and hands on learning!!!  If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to email me at potterk@sjsusa.org

Good Evening....

Happy Father's Day to all :)

I just want to say....it has been a remarkable year.  Your children have showed tremendous growth and have learned so very much.  They are fully prepared for third grade!  I would like to thank you for trusting me with their education this year and for all the assistance you have provided.

I hope you have wonderful, restful summers that are filled with sun.  Thank you so much for the incredibly generous gifts.

I look forward to seeing these third graders next year!!

A safe summer to all,

Mrs Potter

Good Afternoon!

We had a great day today.
Test folders went home today.  They do not need to be returned.  Please notice two things in the folder.  One is an article I copied for you.  It has a great list of new books I thought you might enjoy over the summer,  The other is some writing with note attached.  This is really very impressive writing and I always like to share it with parents.  In addition to the fact that the writing from June is generally more detailed and better organized, it is also written in cursive.  The students should be very proud of themselves.

Other news for the week....

Good Afternoon!!!

Tomorrow is the big day....and we are ready!!!!!  Students who are going home- pick up is at 11:45, in the front of the school.  Students should return to school without their book bags, dressed in communion outfits.  Students who are staying in school- please bring your entire communion outfit to school to change into after lunch.

May Crowning is at 2pm in the Upper Church.  Students should return to school at 1:30.

We are almost done with the math Chapter.  A test will be next week.  The class did a great job when having to regroup twice in addition, however regrouping (borrowing) twice in subtraction is harder.  They need to slow down and remember to do all the steps.  The common error is knowing they have to borrow but not changing the number they borrowed from.  For example:

   512
- 296
_______

They know that 2 cannot take away six.  They change the 2 to a twelve but forget to change the 1 to a zero.
OR
They do the first step correctly and make that mistake the second time.  They know 0 cannot take away 9.  They change the 0 to a ten but forget to change the 5 to a 4.

This would be a good thing to practice at home :)
