Good Afternoon!

Second grade was fabulous today!  We started our day learning more about Johnny Appleseed!  In reading and writing we learned about sequencing.  We practiced this skill as a whole group and independently.  We also did literacy centers.  In math, we started subtraction.  Today in religion, we talked about the disciples and the Apostles.

Test folders are going home today.  Please look at the papers, keep them at home, sign the paper stapled in the folder and return tomorrow.

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

We had a very productive Monday here in second grade.  We wrote about our weekend this morning. Then, in reading we practiced two main skills- visualizing and writing about reading.  We listened to a story and visualized as the book was read (we didn't see the pictures .)  Then we wrote and drew about how the main character was feeling based only our our own visualizations and clues from the text.  We also wrote the beginning, middle and end of the story we read.  We worked in literacy centers and read with Mrs. Potter. We took a spelling pretest and corrected it.

In math, we practiced adding three and four digits.  This can be difficult, so please practice with your child at home. Tomorrow we will move on to subtraction.

In religion, we finished Chapter 1.  We reviewed that Jesus was both human and divine.  We also reviewed the meaning of Holy Family and Blessed Trinity.

We are learning about Johnny Appleseed in social studies and we started to share our All About Me posters with the class!

Reading- Beginning today, I will send one book home in the homework folder p/week.  Please read some of it (or all of it, depending on the book) every night.  Having read independently with every child, this book is a good book for you child's independent reading level.  I will remove the books Friday and send new books on Mondays.  This communication will help you to see your child's progress and will give him/her a book right on level to read.

Good Afternoon!

We had another successful day in second grade today.  In reading we finished assessing reading levels and finished book shopping.  We are reading books by Kevin Henkes. Today we read the book "Owen."  Then we practiced making text to self and even text to world connections.  We also wrote about our favorite part.  In math we worked on adding doubles.  Today in religion we talked about how Jesus was human and how he taught people about God's love. We also talked about how, while Jesus did teach through his words, he also taught through his actions.  We continued to work on complete sentences in grammar.  Today we had gym :)  We also had a special prayer service in remembrance of  9/11.

Good Afternoon!

We had a great day today.  We worked in our handwriting books, continued to do reading assessments and book shopping, reviewed the habits of good readers and started chapter one in religion.  In religion we discussed the Holy Family and that God's greatest gift to us is his son Jesus.  In math, we continue to work on addition up to twenty.  Today we started our grammar books.  You will see the pages we did in the home folder.  Our focus was on complete sentences.  We reviewed starting with a capital and ending with a punctuation mark- in today's lesson, a period. We had our first art class today.

Book Orders went home today.  You do not have to order, but if you do please do so by Friday.  I sent directions home if you wish to, you can order online.  If you wish to pay cash or write a check, just send it in an envelope with the order form by Friday.  There are some great deals in there :)

Good Afternoon!

We had another great day in second grade.
We wrote about our weekend, talked about what good readers do (and discussed what some of those things mean,) went to music and worked on using a number line in addition.  I also started to read with students one on one to get a better idea of individual reading levels.  After I worked with those students, they were able to go book shopping. Dear Camp Families,

Welcome to our first year of camp for the older students!  I hope that everyone has a great time.  My goal is to do some enrichment lessons in reading, writing, math and science through direct instruction and a STEM project.  To give you an idea of what we will be doing….here is my plan.
We will be reading the chapter book “The Lemonade War.”  This is a book about a brother and sister who set up opposing lemonade stands.  In math, we will focus on graphing, measurement and money.  In reading, aside from reading the book itself, we will also read other books about lemonade stands.  I have purchased numerous books (involving lemonade stands), at various reading levels so as to meet the needs of each student and also to challenge students. I believe the books are not only great literature, but will also spark interest in lemonade stands.  In writing, we will focus on writing about what we have read.  We will write using different comprehension strategies including- predicting, making connections, sequencing, and summarizing.  After the math, reading, and writing parts of the morning we will take a break to go outside/have a snack/play.  I anticipate that this will happen around 10:15 each morning.
The second part of the morning will focus on STEM activities.  Our goal is to build lemonade stands with a partner.  Using a variety of materials, students will create lemonade stands.  I will have them draw their designs, create names for their stands and create business cards.  They will choose a recipe from a children’s cookbook.
On Friday, the students will finish the book and their lemonade stands.  We will set the stands up at the end of the camp day and students will “sell” lemonade.
I am planning on sending home a folder each night.  The folder will contain the book we are reading as well as a “homework” assignment. There will be one math activity and one reading/writing activity.  Completing these assignments is COMPLETELY VOLUNTARY.  I know it’s the summer and everyone is busy.  I just thought some parents and students might enjoy the enrichment work.  Please return the folder each morning of camp.
The weather looks really great this week.  It’s going to get pretty warm, but it will be sunny which is great.  My classroom does have air conditioning.  Please send cold water every day for your child.  Each child should have water for the classroom, plus water/drink for snack. Once the students have chosen their recipes for their lemonades, I will ask for help with the supplies for making the lemonade.
Finally, I did purchase three play cash registers for the “sale day.”  I could use one or two more- just to borrow for the week.  If you happen to have one we could borrow, please let me know by Tuesday.
I am looking forward to a great week of fun and hands on learning!!!  If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to email me at potterk@sjsusa.org

Good Evening....

Happy Father's Day to all :)

I just want to say....it has been a remarkable year.  Your children have showed tremendous growth and have learned so very much.  They are fully prepared for third grade!  I would like to thank you for trusting me with their education this year and for all the assistance you have provided.

I hope you have wonderful, restful summers that are filled with sun.  Thank you so much for the incredibly generous gifts.

I look forward to seeing these third graders next year!!

A safe summer to all,

Mrs Potter

Good Afternoon!

We had a great day today.
Test folders went home today.  They do not need to be returned.  Please notice two things in the folder.  One is an article I copied for you.  It has a great list of new books I thought you might enjoy over the summer,  The other is some writing with note attached.  This is really very impressive writing and I always like to share it with parents.  In addition to the fact that the writing from June is generally more detailed and better organized, it is also written in cursive.  The students should be very proud of themselves.

Good Afternoon!

We had a great day today!

Finding patterns in a string of numbers (+/- 1, 10, 100)

Other news for the week....

Wednesday, May 15, 2019

Good Afternoon!!!

Tomorrow is the big day....and we are ready!!!!!  Students who are going home- pick up is at 11:45, in the front of the school.  Students should return to school without their book bags, dressed in communion outfits.  Students who are staying in school- please bring your entire communion outfit to school to change into after lunch.

May Crowning is at 2pm in the Upper Church.  Students should return to school at 1:30.

We are almost done with the math Chapter.  A test will be next week.  The class did a great job when having to regroup twice in addition, however regrouping (borrowing) twice in subtraction is harder.  They need to slow down and remember to do all the steps.  The common error is knowing they have to borrow but not changing the number they borrowed from.  For example:

   512
- 296
_______

They know that 2 cannot take away six.  They change the 2 to a twelve but forget to change the 1 to a zero.
OR
They do the first step correctly and make that mistake the second time.  They know 0 cannot take away 9.  They change the 0 to a ten but forget to change the 5 to a 4.

This would be a good thing to practice at home :)

Homework

Spelling- choose 8 words from the spelling list and use them in sentences, in cursive
